The German Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection are delighted to announce the following conference on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Club of Rome's landmark report 'The Limits to Growth':

The Limits to Consumption

How are the limits to growth impacting our lifestyle?

10th of October 2022 | Federal Environment Ministry, Berlin

Venue: BMUV | Stresemannstraße 128-130 | 10117 Berlin

We are taking the 50th anniversary as an opportunity to take a closer look at the conclusions drawn from the debate on the limits to growth from a consumer perspective: What are the limits to consumption? What and how much less is good enough? How can globally generalizable consumption patterns be defined within planetary boundaries? And would post-growth actually fundamentally change our lifestyles?

The aim of the conference is to embed the abstract discussion based on economic indicators and global planetary boundaries in an everyday context and to make it more concrete. Special attention will be paid to the contribution of individual accounting tools for the concretization of sustainable lifestyles.

Professor Johan Rockström (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), Mamphela Ramphele (Co-President of the Club of Rome), Mathis Wackernagel (Global Footprint Network) and Professor Niko Paech (Universität Siegen) have accepted our invitation to provide their input during the conference.

The conference is aimed in particular at researchers, decision-makers and practitioners in the fields of sustainable consumption, sufficiency, post-growth, operationalization of planetary boundaries and footprints.

In order to ensure a targeted and stimulating exchange in Berlin, the number of on-site participants is limited to 120. For the conference we will provide simultaneous interpretation in German - English and English - German.
